This iReport is part of an assignment:
What did illness teach you? |
You're On Your Own
I became disabled in 2001. I went from $55k to $13k annual income, in the blink of an eye. The story: 2 car wrecks in 4 days - while delivering Christmas presents to needy people. While recovering from that, three years later I was nearly killed in a violent sexual assault.
Now I'm on disability & Medicare - neither of which cover psychiatric or holistic health care. I fall through the cracks age-wise and income- wise for disability, senior services, & most social security benefits. The best I can do is save up my former Medicare payments and pay cash now for medical/dental treatment - wouldn't call it care.
Even dentists demand cash only - when did this happen? Who does this serve?
Mental health patients are the most lost. We often need a person to make the appointment for us and there is nobody willing to do that, let alone assist us with the actual visit.
BOTTOM LINE: I'm forced to live alone and avoid contact with people. I creep out to get food when absolutely necessary. I feel unwanted and un-appreciated in this system, where once I was a vibrant productive citizen.
How did our Health system get so hostile? If you are not rich or lucky, you are totally s**t out of luck.
