Pawning off your prized possessions |
The reality of trying to sell your sentimental items
As a former eBay seller, it's been a wake up call for me to disclose the reality of what items of sentimental value are worth. Over the years, I've met countless people who want to sell items that, in some cases, aren't even worth $10. The prospective buyers are always surprised to find out that their possessions fetch so little, especially when the retail price tag, when new, was so much more. Again, this is eBay and not items sold privately (which can pay more).
Folks are turning to consignment stores, online auctions, Craigslist, and charitable organizations (which have become increasingly selective about accepting unwanted items) to sell their possessions for cash. Friends of mine are hosting clothing swap parties to rid their closets of unwanted items--doesn't make any more but you can come away with some "gently worn" items that are in great condition.
I question every purchase I make, and do I really need another pair of black pants? No. Doing more with less seems to be the order of the day for many people I know. This is the new reality.
Sorry to hear about this fellow having to sell his prized violins for a song. No pun intended.
