My girlfriend and I happened upon an impassioned Free Tibet rally near our apartment on Zhongxiao East Rd in Taipei, Taiwan. As you can see, the rally's message was directed firmly toward the Mainland, particularly president Hu Jintao. Chants included, "Stop The Killing," "Free Tibet," and what sounded like, "who's the killer? Hu Jintao"

Along the route I spoke with a young Tibetian man who noted that such a rally couldn't possibly take place in countries that host a Chinese embassy, however with the absence of one in Taiwan, the rally and its message rang loud and clear. He seemed quite proud to be Tibetian, as well as pleased to have forum to speak openly.

Having a similarly tenuous relationship with the Mainland, Taiwan was a natural choice of venue for the event. Though slightly different situations, Taiwan and Tibet share a common interest in gaining unfettered independence from the China.
