Tobacco tax increase |
Positive Results From Tobacco Tax Hike & New Legislation
From a health standpoint, apparently the tax hike on tobacco has had a positive impact. Quit smoking lines have been bombarded and an estimated million smokers could possibly kick the habit due to the additional cost.
Also, tomorrow, the House will be voting on a bill which would give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate — but not ban — cigarettes and other tobacco products. The bill wouldn't let the FDA ban nicotine or tobacco outright, but the agency would be able to regulate the contents of tobacco products, make public their ingredients, prohibit flavoring, require much larger warning labels and strictly control or prohibit marketing campaigns, especially those geared toward children.
Could the FDA handle this new responsibility, though, considering the problems that have been occurring within the food industry as of late? What are your thoughts?
