Coney Island Opening Day 2009
Miss Coney Island, Angie Pontani, kicks off opening day at Coney Island.
Coney island is in the midst of a major overhaul. Parts of the area have been bulldozed including Astroland.
Although Astroland was a small parcel of land within Coney island, it was a major part of its rich history.
Businesses on the boardwalk were not offered new leases yet these same storefronts have 'Store for Lease' signs posted on their shuddered doors.
Many of the boardwalk concessions stands were open to greet us with the exception of Ruby's Bar and the Souvenir stand.
We're looking forward to this years Mermaid Day Parade in June and The Hot Dog Eating Contest this July
The city and private sectors are squabbling over what to do with the area and how to rebuild the site.
Fortunately, The Cyclone has landmark status as does the Wonder Wheel. Nathan's still stands serving up Brooklyn's best hotdog and french fries..
We are all looking forward to another season at Coney Island.
