    Remembering Ted Kennedy

The Day I Met Ted Kennedy

    To CNN,

I felt compelled to share the day I met and shook hands with Ted Kennedy. It was back in 1999, during the time that he was working hard to pass ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act), and the "Hate Crimes" bills.

I live in New York City, but that year, I had traveled a few times to help the Human Rights Campaign lobby for these bills by visiting Senators and telling them my personal story of discrimination.

The photo you see here, is after a meeting in the morning a couple of months before ENDA was passed.

He reached out and said, "I'm sorry for your story, but thank you so much for all the work you are doing. Keep it up."

I was so struck my his apology, as if he felt some personal responsibility. I was truly touched.

Later that evening, HRC was throwing a social for everyone that was helping to work on this legislation, and Ted Kennedy made a short appearance. Full of energy, grace and a smile that lit up the room.

As he was leaving, I heard him turn to his aid and said under his breath, "Remind me to look into that so I can take care of it." I did not know what he was referring to, but it was telling to me, how intense he is all day long, with his mind clearly focused everything that needs to get accomplished to make America a better place.

As he walked away, I heard him say, "Ok, where to next."

8pm at night, still working hard.

He had such a commanding presence, I have never forgot that day.

If the United States had King and Queens, he would be a Prince.
