Big Debut on Perez Hilton Leads to Challenge with Stephen Colbert
You may have seen them on the internet: Habitat for Hamtramck, a grassroots internet organization that is taking the world on by storm. Launched only Monday, Habitat for Hamtramck made their debut in a huge way: a blog post on the Perez Hilton website.
“It was just a crazy idea” said Andrew Perrotta, who sent the email. “I always read Perez to kill some time before class, and I always see his inspirational for a good cause posts. I thought ‘Maybe he’ll post us’ so I sent him an e-mail and asked him straight up, person to person, if he could help us out. I hit send and forgot about it. The next day I was sitting in class and my brother texted me. ‘Perez posted us’. I didn’t believe him. But it was true.”
And the truth was stranger than fiction. In one day, the site received over a thousand hits. Even more impressive were the donations.
“We received a $500 donation from someone in New York City. A few others donated $50, and one person donated $200. All told we received over $1,000 that day, and I know that traffic was generated from his website” said Perrotta.
His brother Ian agrees. “Because of Perez, our Facebook fan page membership jumped from about 30 members to almost 200. Immediately we got the ball rolling. Well, technically Perez got it rolling, but we built the ball. We just got real lucky and Perez Hilton hosted our kick off party. But things are only just beginning.”
The organization is growing and the momentum is picking up. Already people from all over the world have come forward with support. Most importantly, people from Detroit have volunteered. They have landed in the Detroit area and are picking up support. The organization is compiling a data base of all the supporters in an effort to coordinate the members and help spread awareness for their cause. The Perez article gave them an incredible bump, but this optimistic internet up-start has its eyes on an even bigger prize: the mythical “Colbert Bump”.
“Oh yeah, we are huge Colbert fans,” said Andrew “That is why we know how he operates. Ian came up with an idea for a challenge. Stephen Colbert never backs down from a challenge, especially not from some tiny two bit internet operation! That is why Ian issued the Habitat for Hamtramck vs. Stephen Colbert and the Colbert Nation Challenge. If Colbert and his army of supporters can raise five times our goal of $70,000 for a total of $350,000 we will paint a full size mural of Stephen Colbert on at least one side of the house, if not create a 360 panoramic model of his head as the house. Imagine walking into his mouth and the windows are his two eyes. Or imagine the roof is composed of a mosaic that from the air reveals the image of Colbert. The way I see it is this: there is only one thing you can see from space, the Great Wall of China. Well we want there to be two things: the Great Wall of China and Stephen Colbert.”
It may seem out of reach for a virtually unknown internet organization to challenge Stephen Colbert, but this isn’t your typical organization. Habitat for Hamtramck has already sent out a certified letter to the producer of the Colbert Show, so in their minds, there IS no escape from the challenge.
“Oh, Colbert will find out soon enough, if he doesn’t already know. I’ve been tweeting him asking if he has received and accepted the challenge. I’ve been reminding him that if doesn’t accept the challenge he’s yellow. And last time I checked, yellow was not a color in the American Flag.”
What is in store for Habitat for Hamtramck is unknown. What is known is this internet organization is taking the world on by storm. A new model has been born, call it Web 3.0: the spirit of JFK and the technology of Obama.
Habitat for Hamtramck also wants your help in the challenge. Tell your friends, and have them email, write or twitter Colbert asking him if he as accepted the challenge. They are asking that people spread the link to the website so the whole world knows and Stephen has no chance to duck this challenge.

Habitat for Hamtramck is a grassroots organization with the goal of rehabilitating houses in the Hamtramck area of Detroit and then giving them to families that can help further the positive redevelopment of the area. By accepting donations from the public then redistributing the accrued funds vis-à-vis cash payments to local workers and cash purchases of the building material which can then be gifted to the jobsite, the organization can bypass bureaucratic hassles and tax impediments, speedily accomplishing tasks that may otherwise take months to complete by larger, less pragmatic organizations. The organization is taking steps to become a 501(c) non-profit.
