LDS Youth beautify chapel for soldiers on Fort Jackson SC
Fort Jackson SC-Youth from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Columbia area beautified the grounds of the Anderson Street Chapel on Saturday April 25. The service project is part of a North America Southeast area community service effort by the Church in which an estimated 500,000 members will participate.
The work done by the youth included removing dead bushes, straighten the planter edge on the crushed red cinders, clear out the planters along the building, pick up litter, trim bushes in back so they do not obstruct the sidewalk, and sweep steps going down to the fallout shelter in the back of the building. Young men leader Bill Trapp says, "Our youth are ready to serve at a moments notice whether its on a local level or far away. The youth are like the military in a similar way, there is strength in numbers. We look forward to serving those who chose to serve our country." Young women will also be participating in the beautification. Linda Allen, leader of the young women says, "Our church is a church of service. As a whole we can help milions. How we do this is through service projects like this one. One person can make a difference. We want to teach youth joy in service. Young women in our area when asked to serve come in great numbers and with a great attitude. Last year at our youth conference we wrote 1,000 thank you notes to service men and women overseas. We would like to help our local military. I have great hope for our future. Our youth are amazing."
The project is being coordinated with Chaplain Gilliam who is responsible for the Anderson Street Chapel.
