    Are you a newspaper person?

    More from Lar

    Save The News(papers)

I saw this article and was very excited to see that some people are trying to save the newspapers.

The more I have thought about this lately, the more I realize how essential newspapers (and magazines for that matter) are to our country and democracy. Print media is the ONLY form of news/journalism that actually digs deep and uncovers facts and keeps the public informed (or at least those who choose to perform their civic duty and not be apathetic).

The internet, as great as it is in some ways (i.e. Huffington Post), reports the news more than breaking it. Websites don't have the experience nor resources to do in-depth, long term investigative reporting. And besides, anybody and their mother can be a "reporter" on the web.

And as far as TV news...I will not beat a dead horse as I have commented extensively on this, but TV News is the WORST of it all. They can't even reasonably claim to call themselves "news". It is a sensationalized, news-as-entertainment joke. An utter waste of time.

If the newspapers die, then all we have left is the anything goes wilderness of the internet, and the useless, garbage that is TV"News". And then we as a country will be greatly uninformed, and our democracy will suffer.

So I love this idea of granting non-profit status to newspapers to help them survive. And it's not about bailing out the industry as a matter of economics - for example, I could care less if the big three automakers go bankrupt, somebody will fill the void (that is true capitalism) - it's about bailing out an institution that performs an essential service our nation. So I believe that because of that, non-profit status is more than justified.

    Let's see what happens.
