This iReport is part of an assignment:
Specter switches parties |
GOP knocks itself out
Mr. Specter is running for the blue hills. Don't be fooled he hasn't changed his ideals; he just knows how to play the political game. Two reasons he decided to change
1) The Republican platform is so small now that there is barely any room for moderates. 2) Who wants to run as a Republican in 2010? No one. It's not seen as the party of change. All this scrambling and discussing about what went wrong. Everything was just fine until Democrats took over the house. And they still didn’t make a big push for a change and then Mr. Obama became president and now it's a priority. Where I come from that’s too little too late.
First they get Michael Steele (a black face to head the party just like our president) that doesn't mean your policies are different. And let's face it your policies on everything, from business, taxes, health care, international diplomacy, and civil rights etc. that have lead the Republican Party to its current state. It's these same policies that have put the United States in its current state as well. There is clearly something wrong when members of your own group do not feel they have a place i.e. Colin Powell, Arlen Specter.
To survive as a party you have to able to be open to bring in all types of people. If all you cater to is white males 30-45 you will lose elections every time. To cater to big business and millionaires only you will lose elections every time. If you can not be open to the view points of different countries and societies then you will lose elections every time.
I don't know what the Republican Party can do at this point except scrap their play book, burn it in effigy and start all over.
