Obama to select Sotomayor for Supreme Court |
Who should be chosen for the Supreme Court?
While there are numerous names that could be tossed out for a selection to replace Justice Souter on the US Supreme Court, perhaps what should be focused on is the qualities that the new Justice should possess. Perhaps, we should look at past Justices and create an amalgam, one that would not adhere to party line politics or ideololgy. We should find someone that will interpret the Constitution without sacrificing the spirit of the Constitution, or the freedoms of the people. This new Justice should balance individual rights with the greater good of the people overall. This Justice should not be afraid to lead the way into new territory, while still preserving jurisprudence.
Is this possible? Many of these things are contradictory in nature, yet a Justice should be able to balance these things. A Justice should be a man or woman of the Law, not of public sentiment, nor bend to the will of either the Executive or the Legislature. As these two branches have devolved into working only for self-interest, the Judiciary should be the voice of the people, and the counter-balance the other two brances of Government.
