BREAKING NEWS: Radiation Emergency in Oak Ridge Tennessee
Employees at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory were evacuated Saturday morning after an operational emergency was declared.
Radiation alarms went off in Building 7920, the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center around 5:07 a.m. Later monitoring of the area revealed that no radiation had been released from the facility, according to the Operations Emergency Center in Oak Ridge.
The building is a laboratory where research, production and storage of materials such as medical isotopes take place.
Employees in nearby facilities were sheltered-in-place as a precaution, but that was lifted around 9:11 a.m.
Officials said emergency response personnel are preparing to enter the hot cell area to the REDC to reset air monitors that activated earlier and to assess current conditions.
