'Star Trek' is back! |
Where No Star Trek Has Gone Before
Golden, Co -- (iReport) I have been watching Star Trek since before I could drive. Like many Trekkies, I was a bit concerned about the direction a new crew and a new director would take the characters I have known and loved for over 40 years. Let me start this review by saying that if you love Star Trek, you should be out somewhere in a theater seeing this new movie. Don't sit here reading, get going now. I can wait until you get back.
Okay, now that you have seen it, I bet you will agree that this was the Star Trek we have always dreamed of. It's not that the other iterations of the Trek were bad, it's just that there was always a sense that they were on a sound stage someplace with foam rocks and lights on the cyclorama to make it look like the planet had a green sky. You know what I mean. This movie cost $130 million and every penny of it shows up on the screen. Main engineering is no longer the size of my first apartment on 25th street in Ogden, Utah. It is acres of space that looks like a star ship engine room. The stunts, the ships, the actors and the production design set this version of Star Trek above any other version you have seen.
I will warn the hard core fans, though, that there have been some changes made to the mythology. You will know them when you see them. Great care was taken to weave this film into the traditional version of the story, but there are some moments that will make you sit up and go, "WTH." (What the heck. I wanted to keep this G Rated but you get the idea.)
On the other hand, some of the changes are pretty sweet. This is the first story in the history of the franchise where you will end up saying under your breath, "Hey, is Spock hittin' that?"
The acting is uniformly great. From Ben Cross and Leonard Nimoy through the entire cast, this just shouted top quality motion picture performance. In the history of Star Trek there has never been an Academy Award. I don't know if there will be nominations for this one, but I hope there will. I used to go to Temple with Leonard Nimoy and once met him at a cafe on Melrose Avenue. I have always had warm feelings for him as a person, and in this film I can see that they have all been well deserved. The part Nimoy plays is not a walk-on, he made a great contribution to this film and it is appreciated.
I don't want to give away too much about the movie except to say that it starts out a little slow, but give it a chance. By the end of the first half hour it really hits its pace and you won't catch your breath until final credits roll.
I give Star Trek (2009) 5 bottles of Romulan ale and a really, really hot green skinned Orion babe. Go see it.
