Amtrak GE P-42 Locomotive
Built in Erie, Pennsylvania the diesel electric Genesis P- 42 is Amtrak's primary locomotive for long distance trains. With 4,250 horsepower it has a top speed of about 110 mph. This is not normally realized due to speed restrictions caused by track, signaling etc. on the host railroad. Normally top speed is restricted to 79 mph and in some rare cases 90 mph. Contrast this to the north east corridor between Washington D.C. and Boston where top speeds can reach 150 mph. The difference is that Amtrak owns this corridor and the Acela train sets are capable of 165 mph. Acela trains are all electric as are most high speed trains today. The track and signaling is good for these high speeds on Amtrak's corridor.
