When I was a child in the fifties, the 411 Drive-In in Leesburg, Alabama was a great delight of lush summer nights. But over the years, outdoor movies gave way to air conditioning and rocking chair seats ... and the 411 became an abandoned field with a deteriorating screen and a vine covered concession stand.
And then, a few years back, Rex Johnson, the son of the 411's original owner, decided to resurrect the Drive-In movie tradition in Leesburg.
Now, in rural Cherokee County, as the deep South dusk descends, people from far and near find their way back to the fifties, where first run movies play on two screens, and the freshly grilled 411 burgers are once again the best meal around.
Wow! The old 411 Drive-In is new again .... and it's bringing back the best of small town America. Imagine pick up trucks parked backwards, their beds lined with kitchen chairs which create a picturesque rendition of box seats. Imagine blankets spread on the hoods of cars and lawn chairs grouped in neighborly fashion as gangs of laughing children run in packs, chasing lighting bugs in the grassy areas under the big screens. Imagine the smell of popping corn, the taste of fountain Cokes, Sugar Babies and giant Dill Pickles ... and you get the picture ... the "big picture" ..... of movie night at the 411 Drive-In!
