This iReport is part of an assignment:
Generation Islam |
Average American Family Understands
I've got Muslim neighbors. We don't share a common religion, however our children share a neighborhood, and schools, and play together. At times I feel parts of the Koran are at odds with civilized society in general, but then, so is the Bible.
My muslim neighbors are very friendly, kind, and decent. We have shared meals together, celebrations, and play time, and their son has even helped me and my sons do yard work.
I was offended by one of my non-muslim neighbor's actions on New Years. I took my boys out at midnight and brought them over to the neighbors house (as we had been invited over to celebrate) and invited the neighbors kids to come out with me and my boys to bang pots and pans together at midnight! The ignorant and cruel racist neighbors across the street started jeering me and the kids, mocking us with cruel laughter and the typical Muslim tongue roll of celebration.
I felt ashamed to be American.
My brother has risked his life for 2 years in Baghdad, to help Iraqi's rebuild their country. The vast majority of Iraqi's are Muslim. I am proud of his service. I hope that someday soon, the Iraqi's as seen in this photograph taken by my brother on the 4th of July last year, will be able to celebrate an independence day of their own. An independence that gives them liberty, peace, and true religious freedom.
I have high hopes I realize, but I know that I will not stand aside and let ignorance prevail.
