This iReport is part of an assignment:
Your thoughts on same-sex marriage |
New Hampshire and the domino effect
The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize gay marriages in 2001. This was followed by Belgium, Norway, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Sweden, and many more. Eight years later came New Hampshire and now It's only a matter of time before gays and lesbians in and from the USA will inevitably be granted equal rights on a federal level. The domino effect is in motion and New Hampshire, and New England, has started the motion in America. It's unavoidable as it becomes clear to the majority, regardless of sexual orientation, that denying equal rights to gays and lesbians is unconstitutional. Denying equal rights based on the bible or any other religion cannot be accepted, for we live in a democracy which is supposed to be based on the separation of church and state. So whether you or I like it or not, equal rights must be given.
Currently there are thousands of US citizens living abroad with their same sex partners, in countries where marriages or some type of civil union is recognized. So how does New Hampshire affect those like me? It gives us hope, that one day our country will once again lead the world as the place where one can find liberty and justice for all.
