    Remembering the fallen

    Little Remembered

In 1942 Japan invaded the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The battle to reclaim this portion of the US caused many soldiers to loose thier lives. Those two sentences may come as a surprise to many Americans. My grandfather, Robert Lubinski, was there. He was fortunate to make it home.

I was young when he died and know little of what he did in Alaska. My father tells me the only stories my grandfather ever told  were about being cold and hunting bear because they were tired of always eating lamb.

I am a soldier. Ive been to Iraq twice and am in the middle of my third tour. I have memories that I will take to the grave. My kids will probably only hear of how hot it is and MRE's.

None of this really matters. I guess the point I am trying to make is that it should be known that many people paid the ultimate price for our freedoms during the little remembered conflicts as well as the battles that overshadowed them.
