Gay Pride Rome June 13, 2009
Gay Pride was celebrated in the center of Rome today in the Piazza della Repubblica. These are some of the images I took today along with the music that was coming off of one of the trucks lined with people (many Transgender) singing along (You can see this at :41). Although there were police cars all around the piazza, there was no trouble. It was a peaceful celebration. There were nearly as many of us photographers as there were participants. These shots are all from the first hour. I left after that because it was getting really crowded.
Some of the signs you see are digs at politicians and, of course, at the Church. Many Italians (gay and straight) would like the church to have less influence on the laws of the country. That is certainly reflected in the comments and the posters of some of the participants.
