"Protect Marriage Washington" Draws Local Support in Eastern Washington
My Washington State representatives were on hand today for the Protect Marriage Washington Rally at the Yep Kanum Park in Colville, WA.
As you can see in the video, the rally is based around a petition drive for a voter referendum that will revoke a recent law that the Wash. State legislature passed and that was signed by Governor Chris Gregoire.
Unlike Prop 8 in California, R-71 was filed before the law went into effect. The law is now on "hold" so no marriages have been performed to date. If enough signatures are collected on the petition, the referendum will be on the ballot in November.
I have a copy of the petition. It highlights two "talking points":
"The legislature just passed a law that effectively makes same-sex marriages legal. By signing R-71 we can reverse that decision and protect marriage as between one man and one woman."
"If same-sex marriage becomes law, public schools K-12 will be forced to teach that same-sex marriage and homosexuality are normal...even over the objections of parents. Sign R-71 to protect children."
