Citizens of a small town fight to keep their library open.

Citizens of Fallston Maryland and those who support public libraries across our country would like the Harford County  Public Library Board of Trustees to keep the doors of one of it‘s largest circulation libraries open. The down turn in the economy resulting in county budget cuts are the reasons being given as to why our library is slatted to close. However, this library board has been given a larger operating budget this year then last. The Board of Trustees will be voting on this issue after the second Public Hearing, Thurs, June 25, 2009.
At last Thursday’s Public Hearing only 130 citizens where able to sit inside the room, there where about another 50 people who remained outside the doors trying to hear what was being said. It's hard to say how many where turned away at the library doors. But after Del. Rick Impallaria, who represents Fallston in the Maryland General Assembly walked through the crowded waiting room outside, he stated that he thought 75% more people where turned away then who where able to get into the room. After 23 residents where able to speak, with in the allotted time there was an appeal to the board to hold another public meeting where there would be ample room for those who show up. So that no one will be turned away do to obeying fire codes. During this meeting over 3,000 signatures where submitted, from a town with a population of just over 8,000 where submitted. This is a unified and passionate community who wants to keep their library and who have posted SaveFallstonLibrary.com signs around town and who started an online petition, which is linked to the SaveFallstonLibrary.com web site. Our community is reaching out to our country imploring them to call elected officials in Maryland and around the US. We need to come out of this bad financial time stronger and leaner and without closing our libraries.
