    Catie WINGFIELD DORSEY {1850-1933}

    Our Family Matriarch Catherine WINGFIELD DORSEY {my 4th Grandmother} was born into slavery in Georgia the year of 1850.

     

    She was brought to Washington-Wilkes from Warren County, by James Madison DICKEY, a Methodist Minister assigned to oversee the reconstruction of the Smyrna Church.

     

    Catie survived two husbands - James WINGFIELD {my 4th Grandfather} & Joe DORSEY. She gave birth to at least 10 Children - Marrie {my Great-Great Grandmother}, John, Fannie, Vandora, Elbert, Saile, Missie, Mack, Goldie & Daisy.

     

    From oral tradition we also know that Grandma Catie was owned by a “Master Cody” in Warren County & left behind her Sister, Allie.

     

    Grandma Catie endured the murder of my Grandfather James in 1885, while pregnant with my uncle Elbert.

     

    Her Mother {my 5th Grand!} was Katie WILLIAMS & her Father, Jim DICKSON. She & Uncle El lived on Norman Street in Washington and Mingo Wingfield called her “Cousin Catie”.

     

    She was dearly loved by her children & grands.

     

    {This picture of Catie was taken in Cincinnati, OH in 1930. She traveled there to take her terminally ill Daughter, Marrie to visit family for one last time. Marrie passed April 5, 1930.}
