Mourners Gather for Michael Jackson in Second Life

Shortly before 6:00 PM Pacific Time, I decided to search within the virtual world of Second Life to see if any hint existed of Michael Jackson within the computer generated land. I was surprised to discover a small dance club, dedicated to both Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, called "Golden Star: Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson Tribute Tower." When I visited the area, I was surprised to learn I was not the only person who had the idea of seeking out a means of expression in the virtual world.

About thirty to forty residents were in the club, speaking and sharing memories of the superstar. Many talked about their favorite songs, ones that rolled into the chat often followed by expressions of sadness: “Smooth Criminal,” “Thriller,” “Man in the Mirror…”It shows how raw and untapped music can be, how the emotions of song can impact us all.

Maddock Biedermann formed a tribute group for the Second Life residents to state how much they miss Michael Jackson as the gathering of people increased. “For all of us here, we would like to say, thank you for the music. Also, we thank you for the things you gave to us over the years, the culture of pop you created and the movement that led to our pride in our music we have. You were our inspiration and our prodigy! We salute you! We will never see the like again!” said Daisy Picnic aloud to the heavens for Michael.

Jonnielee Blackheart stated “Just like Elvis, Lennon, and all the greats, Jacko will never truly be gone, as his music will carry his legacy through the ages. He's done the hard work through his life, now is the time where it truly pays off, and all his fans unite for the memory of the man, the music, the legend.”

“I think you had to be in that age group too, 30-50 to understand what his music meant and did.” Said Jameslarken Supply. “You know, people said a lot about him, he had his troubles, but I don’t think most people realize the pressure, change, and lack of privacy people have with his stature in life.”

A person may view Second Life as emotionally difficult with the barriers of communication over computers. However, Tao Cyberstar stated the core meaning of the random gathering well “We are people, it is a sign of respect. Even avatars act like humans.” Given the level of self-expression tonight, feelings and emotions were not lacking in the small room with images of Jackson.

As individuals began to pass around candles, a few noted that music was not playing today in the dance club.  Silence and remembrance today were more fitting than hearing music as the candles were passed to new arrivals to the growing makeshift memorial.
