Baseball Players Endorsed Beer in 19th Century

If you thought sports and beer were a relatively new phenomenon, think again. At a recent baseball memorabilia auction, a poster featuring Cap Anson and Buck Ewing, two of pro baseball's top stars during the sport's infancy, sold for $188,000. The poster, issued in 1889, shows the two heroes sitting around, presumably after a big game, sipping a glass of ale. The "Anson/Ewing beer poster" is considered one of the most desired items in both the historic baseball and classic American advertising poster collecting worlds. The multicolor stone lithograph poster was issued to promote GuinnessBrewery's "Finest Pale Ale" and "Extra Foreign Stout," both of which were sold under the company's "E. & J. Burke" label. The poster represents the firstdocumented paid endorsement of a product of any kind by baseball players.
