Iran Support Group Meet In SL

A sea of green, twisting and winding its way all around the world, a flow that cannot be stopped, seeping through every little gap that it can find until everyone on the whole planet becomes aware of it’s presence.  This sea of green is the symbol of the brave and touching pieces of information and messages being passed out of Iran by the people who are protesting against the election and meeting such brutality and bloodshed from the government as a response.  People are dying, being beaten and arrested, but still the people protest as they try to stand up for what they believe are their fundamental democratic rights.

Second Life was used as a discussion group for Iran tonight, and I went over to see what was happening there.   The organisers talked about the protests and the way that information is still being bravely sent out to the rest of the world by the people who are witnessing the carnage on the streets.  I am told that the Iranian government try to suppress the coverage being shown to the rest of the world and the plucky individuals who transmit the information are being tracked down and arrested.  Despite the beatings and the killings of the protesters, the people are determined to win their freedom of speech and demand a true democracy.

I had not been surprised that SL is now being used to support the Iranians in their struggle, as internet and mobile phone technology is a tool to openness and transparency that oppressive regimes had not had to deal with in the past.    It also means that other countries can’t ignore what is going on.

Tonight at the gathering in SL there were touching poems being read, tributes to the martyrs who have lost their lives, such as the lady called Neda who was shot dead in one of the protests and the latest pieces of news coming out of Iran, plus people with strong hearts brave enough to keep up with their support of the ordinary people of Iran, who just want a fair deal.
