Iraqi forces prepare for symbolic handover
One day before U.S. and Coalition forces withdraw from Iraqi cities in accordance with the Status of Forces Agreement, platoons of Iraqi servicemen mustered around the tomb of the unknown soldier. Heavy with symbolism, the monument was constructed to mark the 'victory' of Iraqi forces during the 8 year Iran-Iraq war. But the tombsite itself, constructed to suggest a sunburst emanating from a soldier who has fallen but still holds his shield and lance aloft was only the backdrop for their exercises. Their real goal is to parade through the crossed swords, erected to commemorate the same war and fashioned after Saddam's own hands, returning to the ousted dictator's parade grounds and passed a reviewing stand of Iraq's new leadership.
