The Dark Side of Biking to Work
Don't get me wrong I love my biking to work and even though I am not in a big city in some ways that makes my commute harder. I live in Bangor Maine and though it is not a Boston or a NYC for me it is pretty big. I've noticed many stories about people biking to work and I totally agree I want to see more people also mentioned about how cars just don't give them the respect that we need. I recently was struck by a half ton truck when I was on my way to work. I was not doing anything but following the laws written by the state of Maine; I was on the right hand side of the road, I was in the shoulder and being aware of my surroundings ( yes I saw the truck) when I was hit, this occured not because I was not watching where the truck was but becasue he decided a stop sign was an optional thing and did not see me. I realize he could have missed me in BRIGHT RED( hey, he missed a stop sign eh?) But something about that does not sit well with me so I am ignoring that faction of reality ( I'm talking really bright red) Now, I quote the man after he struck me in, " I heard you but did not see you" Ok so you heard me and kept moving until I made more noise, great. I mean I had just been cleared to ride again after pulling a muscle so I was pissed. Then after I pulled my self out of the middle of the street ( the man watched me crawl from the middle of the road staring) as I stopped cursing at him and dustd myself off I was relived to find myself not seriously hurt but after he kept standing there a passerby called the cops as I walked home I had to get to work but I did contact the police when I got there apparently missing them being at the scene by moments. I have yet to hear back and all I really want is people who are adament about driving their cars through this time that people are trying other ways to commute keep an eye out and don't act stupid if you hit somoene be out there apologizing and helping them it will make the aftermath much less severe.
