    Fire In The Sky

As a strong thunderstorm cell drenched Manhattan, accompanied by lightning and booming thunder, I stood by the window of my 30th floor apartment  to indulge in the spectacle.  The date  was June 26, 2009, and the sun was just setting around 8:35pm EST.  The downpour stopped and momentary peaks of sunlight streaked through the storm clouds.  All of a sudden, an apocalyptic vision confronted me as the sky was filled with fantastical shapes framed against a blood-red firmament. I grabbed my camera and took this shot to confirm my sighting.  It seems that this was an instance where I witnessed a Mammatus cloud formation, which sometimes occurs after a thunderstorm.  I was lucky to have photographed this chimeracle display.  Usually it only lasts from five to ten minutes.
