Remembering Michael Jackson |
Neverland Ranch - On Scene
I visited Neverland Ranch in Los Olivos, CA on 3 July to say goodbye to Michael Jackson. He was such an influence on music, dance, and music videos; much of my childhood was spent watching his videos and trying to dance like him.
The scene at Neverland was chaotic. Many were respectful and paying tribute; but others were trampling the rose bushes and memorials so they could get themselves in a good photo. Worst were those stealing flowers from the large white wreaths hung on the gate to the ranch. There were lots of vendors selling shirts, buttons, and stickers. Three walls were set up for people to leave personal messages; they were covered with messages in many languages.
At one point large speakers were set up to blast Jackson's music to the crowd, and folks started dancing. It was a beautiful scene; folks from many races, of all ages, sharing in the music which appeals to everyone.
The ranch is located in the middle of farmland, surrounded by cows and horses. You cannot see any of the buildings on the property from the gate; it's very private and peaceful.
