Plinthers start 100 days in Trafalgar Square

Artist Anthony Gormley's project One and Other started this morning in Trafalgar Square.  It is a contemporary art commission that will see a different person take their place on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days.

Participants were randomly chosen by computer and there were no auditions.  From 15,000 applications 2400 people will be selected, you just have to be over 16 and live in the UK.  Applications are open until September.

I got very interested in this project because of the the excitement and controversy.  The art world is calling it 'intellectually bankrupt' but the public and the city of London seem to love it.  Regardless, everyone seems to have an opinion.

It launched today at 9 am GMT... in the rain.  In the few hours I was there, I saw a protestor, balloons for charity, a single mom doing it for her kids and a guy dressed as a panda.  It should prove interesting for the next 100 days.
