    "Bring Bruce Home"
    By: Shelley Bright
    08/16/09

"Is the United Kingdom losing the right to call itself a "Nation of Animal Lovers"- and is the United States right behind them?  Major media giants CNN, BBC, SKY News fail miserably in covering a story that people want to hear"...

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated." Ghandi

    Shame on you Northern Ireland
    Shame on your bureaucracy
Shame on Northern Ireland for the neglect and cruelty inflicted on an innocent at the hands of a government agency
Shame on you Northern Ireland..your sadness as a nation-for the whole world to bear witness...

These are just some of the hundreds if not thousands of comments, and statements being written in blogs, social networking sites, and feeds in support of this dog's tragic tale.  The media attention is gaining momentum and starting to multiply at an alarming rate in aide of an innocent dog's life.

The life and dog in question belongs to "Bruce", a young, once-healthy and fit Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was living happily with his family in Northern Ireland.

His crime? None other than being a victim of his own appearance and physical characteristics.  Bruce has never shown aggression, attacked, bitten, or so much as growled at a human or animal.

His sentence? Bruce is condemned and scheduled to die at the hands of the Northern Ireland government agency regulating animal welfare and public safety, at a time of their choosing.

On September 19, 2007, this family's once quiet and peaceful world was shattered when council officials seized and confiscated Bruce, their pet, for being an alleged "pit bull type".

Bruce was taken and isolated to a government operated kennel, while his owner was taken to court for owning a banned type of dog under the Northern Ireland's Dangerous Dog Law.

Neglect, mistreatment, animal cruelty at the hands of a government agency..
Since his incarceration in September of 2007, two years have now past and  Bruce's owners have been granted only two visits during this time.

According to his owners and photographed evidence taken during these visits,

Bruce's care is questionable and distressing, to say the least.  His once healthy proportioned body is now dangerously underweight.  Where he once had muscle mass, he now has prominent protrusions of his rib and hip bones showing  through his skin.  Where he once had a beautiful lustrous and shiny coat of fur, now shows open skin sores, and deformed scarring throughout it. His nose and muzzle, show evidence of a large gaping sore festering with infection that will not heal.

But, most tragic of all is that this dog once had a lively, thumping-wagging tail so evident of his affection, sadly it is now amputated due to infection.

To hear of the way he received these injuries is even more heartbreaking, Bruce has been caged day in and day out in a kennel-crate too small, with little room to turn around, rubbing his tail and nose raw from the cramped conditions.

In response to the growing outrage and demand that a formal legal  inquiry be brought forth of the alleged violations of animal cruelty, neglect and abuse violations of the North Borough Downs Council, board certified Veterinarians are willing to testify that these types of injuries are sustained by closed-quartered confinement for prolonged periods of time resulting in painful pressure and friction sores.  Also, given that infection occurred and did not resolve, resulting in amputation of the tail, calls into serious question as to what, how and when any medical treatment was ever administered to Bruce and even, if any at all.

According to an anonymous source directly involved with the case, who asked not to be identified, they stated,

"It is quite concerning and distressing to think that this animal who was once a young healthy animal, who came to this kennel and within the last two years has been subjected to this mistreatment and is now reduced to such a poor physical state from the obvious neglect and care at the hands of our government".

    Dangerous dog?
Experts have testified and reported that,

"Regardless of the tremendous pain and isolation of  these last two years, evidenced by his poor physical condition, and despite his terrible circumstances, Bruce is still a friendly, well-adjusted dog that poses no danger to the public in any way."

These experts have testified to the courts of this fact.

    "Bring Bruce Home"
Even after desperate attempts in creating public awareness and gaining public support and sympathy, creating petitions, and videos resulting in worldwide support to "Bring Bruce Home", Northern Ireland will not compromise and have failed in resolving this dog's existence.

According to a close case supporter,

"They have allowed this gentle pet dog to sit and deteriorate physically for over two years, for no reason other than a ridiculous piece of legislation, it's inexcusable."

Northern Ireland has not adopted the 1997 Amendment Act as in England, Scotland, and Wales, despite being proposed several times, meaning any dog deemed by authorities discretion to be a "pit bull type" cannot be entered onto the Index of Exempted dogs.

If the proposal had been accepted in Northern Ireland, as with the rest of the UK, Bruce would be home and in good health long before now, alive and registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

Northern Ireland is currently still considering legislative change, however, it has also been under consideration for these last two years.

If Bruce lived in Southern Ireland where no breeds are nationally banned he would have never been seized at all.

In Southern Ireland a reputable rescue operation has been proposed and offered for Bruce's relocation to the Northern Ireland courts.

An opportunity to continue living out the rest of his life in peace.  A perfectly viable solution and compromise for everyone involved.  But, sadly this has been rejected by the court for reasons lacking any legal validity.

    According to the anonymous source,

"There is a divided and growing apprehension with government officials and the growing questions continue to surface as to what the true motivations of this care really are? This animal has done nothing wrong other than be born and unfortunately because of his physical characteristics he is now condemned to die needlessly.  He has languished for two long years, been maimed, scarred, and cruelly isolated from human contact for none other than his physical markings.  We have taken a perfectly gentle, and beautiful pet that belonged to a citizen taxpayer that employs this government to work for them, and we are destroying their pet, slowly and cruelly, it is unconscionable".

What if this was your dog?
    Canine Chronicle published an article

"Anatomy of Breed Specific Legislation" by Dr. Carmen Battaglia and she states, "Anti-dog legislation is gaining momentum at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, in  most communities, dog owners do not become involved until they are faced with  the consequences of the legislation. This means that others drive the agenda  that affects their pets. Historically, the response to dog problems has been to  fight each proposal one by one, city by city. This approach no longer works as  more proposals are prepared each year. A new strategy with a more penetrating and focused effort is needed…one that embraces coalitions of informed citizens  whose purpose is to guide and steer the course of legislation and the political  future of officials who are bent on eliminating dogs from their community".

This brings to light some disturbing observations of this dangerous legislation so sporadically enacted all around the world.

It also raises speculation and outrage as to why this is not newsworthy enough for media giants CNN, BBC, and SKY news to warrant coverage.

The "Bring Bruce Home" petition has garnered over 13,000 signatures from around the world.  Public demonstrations, protests, and candlelight vigils are scheduled from the U.S. to London in support of Bruce's cause.

This case has touched and united dog lovers from around the world in support to "Bring Bruce Home".

One can not help but wonder when will we finally understand that we are all connected and intertwined, that this kind of legislation reaches far and wide, no matter the nation, no matter where in the world and that it is only a matter of time before another "Bruce" reaches our home and at our own front doors. Sadly, next time, it might be one of ours.

12,000 join global campaign to save dog court ruled is illegal pit-bull

    By Diana Rusk
    08/07/2009

DOG lovers across the world have backed a Co Down woman’s two-year legal battle to stop her pet ‘pit-bull’ from being destroyed.

Shannon Brown’s dog Bruce was seized from its home in Bangor by North Down Borough Council wardens in September 2007 and has been in kennels ever since.

A district judge last year determined the animal was a pit-bull – an illegal breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act – and ordered the animal be put down.

Despite the dog’s owner lodging an appeal in the case, the original ruling was upheld in Belfast Magistrate’s Court last Monday and it was ordered that the dog be destroyed within a week.

Ms Brown (20) then applied for a judicial review, which was dismissed but she has been given until Monday to appeal the decision in a last ditch attempt to save the animal.

It is understood the court has ruled that the animal does not pose a risk to the public.

Almost 12,000 people from all over the globe have signed an online petition to ‘Bring Bruce Home’ and protests have been organised in America with news channel CNN covering the case.

Northern Ireland is unique in Britain and Ireland because all animals a court decides are pit-bull types must be destroyed.

Ms Brown last night insisted her pet was not dangerous. "He has never harmed anyone,” she said. “We found Bruce as a puppy in a cardboard box on Albert Street in Bangor and he was just over two years old when he was seized.

“I have always maintained that he is not a pit-bull but that he is a Staffordshire-Bull Terrier.

“He lived with me and my partner’s child, who was three years old, and a Labrador and never caused any harm to either of them.

“I understand pit-bulls being used for fighting would be a danger but this was a family pet who was never abused in any way.”

She said a dog sanctuary in the Republic of Ireland where pit-bulls are a legal breed, has offered to provide a home to Bruce.

Ms Brown said she would be “heartbroken” if her pet is destroyed and hopes international support for her case can add pressure.

“The response has been brilliant and crazy and completely unexpected,” she said.

“There are signatures from all over the world – Italy, South Africa, China, everywhere – protests have been held in America over Bruce and CNN has covered it.”

David Brown from North Down Borough Council said wardens were carrying out their duty when they seized the dog on 19 September 2007 after reports that the animal was an illegal breed.

However, he agreed the legislation around dangerous dogs in Northern Ireland is “not fit for purpose”.

“The judges don’t like it. We don’t like it and we hope the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will soon clarify the legislation,” he said.

“We have been inundated with hundreds of emails and telephone calls from around the world in this case.”

    Dangerous dog legislation

    - Northern Ireland is the only place in Britain and Ireland where dogs found to be of the pit-bull type must be destroyed under legislation

    - Pit-bulls are one of four dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991

    - In 1997 an amendment to the Act was accepted in England, Scotland and Wales removing the mandatory destruction order for illegal breeds if the court accepts the animal does not pose a risk to the public

    - These dogs are entered on to the Index of Exempted Dogs instead of being destroyed

    - However, the amendment was never extended to Northern Ireland

    - The case is even more clear cut in the Republic where no breeds are banned and some dog sanctuaries operating there give homes to pit-bulls from the north

    - Legislation is being reviewed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

    - On November 20 2007, agriculture minister Michelle Gildernew announced a review of the Dangerous Dogs Act and dog fighting legislation

    - She has held meetings with the PSNI and representatives of District Councils to consider what action should be taken but no decisions have yet been made

    - In March she said she would present a bill to the assembly after the summer recess

    - It is the responsibility of district councils to enforce the act even though many dog wardens have been calling for amendments to be made to the legislation

    - The maximum penalty for owning a banned dog type is six months imprisonment or a £5,000 fine

    End of story

OMG!!!!!! Please ban stupid people!! Does anybody else see in the early videos of Bruce he actually smiles! I know several people with pitbulls and they are really sweet dogs. They are only mean if they are in a mean environment. Obviously that is not the case with Bruce. I'm afraid with what he has been thru, you stupid people has broken his spirit. You should be put in a place with wounds that never heal and be starved to like Bruce. I know there is a special place in doggie heaven for dogs like Bruce. Hang in there big guy, your owners love you very much, unlike the ones who are supposidly taking care of you now.

this brought tears to my eyes, and i truley do hope this helps get bruce back to his family! i also have a pitbull and she is so awsome, i could not imagine being without her. pitbulls are very loyal ad playfull dogs, and if anyway that they are mean or a danger it would only be because of thier owners. it is horrible that someone would take away a loveing pet for any reason from a family that loves and cares for him, this is animal cruelty!!

Poor little innocent Bruce needs to be able to go home to his family and his family certainly deserves to have him home. This is disgusting what is happening. If only the "powers that be" knew how sweet and loving these creatures can be. These poor dogs have a bad reputation because of people and what people do to them. It's not the dog. Those that fight these animals and do horrific things to them are the ones that need punished. Not poor little Bruce. Those supposedly "in charge" need to realize that you need to PUNISH THE DEED, NOT THE BREED. I have one that I rescued and you can tell that this poor boy has been mistreated; but, he is the sweetest thing. So loving. Doesn't want to be around strangers but is not aggressive to them at all. He just wants to hide from them. PLEASE, PLEASE, do not punish Bruce and his family. Please let this sweet fellow go back to his family. It's just not fair to do this to him because of what some idiotic fools do to this breed to give them a bad name. It's just plain wrong THIS IS WRONG!!!!! How can you look into those eyes and do this to Bruce? How can you sleep at night? This whole situation is just heartbreaking and wrong. I ask again, please let Bruce go home. It's been way too long. He needs his family and they need him.

This dog has been tortured for two years. He has suffered severe neglect resulting in appalling mutilation and infections. If he is not rescued soon, he will die and those responsible should face murder charges. This whole situation is outrageous. Two years in prison in deplorable conditions for no crime! Only two family visits in all that time! This govt. is uncivilized and completely barbaric.

Give this poor, innocent dog back to his loveing family!! The ones that deserve what you are doing are the low lifes who fight dogs!! It isn't fair to look at a dog a say its mean just because of its breed!!!I can't imagine what I'd do if they took my dog!!! Hope it all works!!! (Let me know when you get him back!!!)

This is government sanctioned cruelty. How can anyone think that this kind of inhumane treatment is enlightened? It is simply driven by fear and ignorance, and puts me in mind of the attitudes of racists. I remember a time in my own lifetime when many people thought that because someone was of another race that they were inherently bad or stupid. Breed bans are the same thing, just the species is different. It is a way for ignorant people to remain that way because they fear becoming educated and expanding their awareness and the changes that will bring to their lives. It is always easier to remain stuck in prejudice, but it does not advance kindness and compassion the way a little bit of personal enlightenment will. I will pray for you, Bruce, and your family to be reunited, and for this ridiculous and cruel law to be changed.

This is an outrage! To take a well-loved, well cared for animal from it's owners because of ignorance, prejudice and knee-jerk legislation is horrendous! How dare you make a judgment based on an animals breed! This is exactly the kind of thinking that caused the awful treatment of human beings based on their skin color, religion and national origin! I thought that of all people, the Irish would understand what it is like to be judged based on some perceived image perpetrated by fear and hatred! Return this poor dog to his family and stop this terrible injustice - the whole world is watching! To this poor family - you have my heartfelt sympathy! I have had 2 Rottweilers - the most intelligent, loving, kind dogs you have ever seen and have been met with fear, rage, hatred and ignorance at every turn! And I know that if they had come to take my beautiful gentle girls it would have been over my dead body!

To assume a dog is dangerous by appearance is sloppy assumption at best, an excuse to kill innocent animals on a whim at worst....A dog is not born dangerous, it is a brutal and uncaring owner that makes it that way. Judge a dogs charecter by its owners actions NOT by the appearance of the dog!

There are millions of homeless unloved dogs in this world, it's a waste of time, energy and money to take away Bruce from his family when that time energy and money could be better spent doing some real good for the world. There;s this concept I was taught since I was a small child, it's called picking your battles, legislation needs to become reacquainted with it.

My grandmother who hailed from your country would be ashamed of your inhumanity to this animal and it's family. At the very least, you could care for his wounds and exercise him. As my grandmother would say, shame ,shame, shame!

I think it is disgusting that peoples pets are taken from them because of a minority of small minded people who have no idea what they are doing. Not all pit bulls are dangerous and in fact most are very loving and intelligent pets but because a few nasty people train them to become dangerous the goverment want to put them all to sleep. A pit bull is naturally no more dangerous than a border collie or a yorkshire terrier. Let Bruce go home to those who love and need him.

Let these people have their precious dog ! They believe in him, and trust him, and have had no problems with him. This breed is so severely misunderstood. It is the moronic humans that own a large part of these dogs & mistreat them to the point of extreme abuse that spurs a majority of the attacks. I have owned 2 of these dogs, and one when my daughter was a newborn.......and not once was there even a hint of any problems. Instead of putting a ban on the breed, why don't you place restrictions such as how they are to be housed & leashed so that honest loving families can still have a pit bull if they desire............

Do not kill this innocent animal. Killing any animal because of the actions HUMANS train them for is wrong. Kill the human. You do not kill an animal because of the breed they are. ANIMALS ARE NOT BORN TO KILL just as children are not born to kill. Killing is a learned behavior taught by the human being, taught by YOUR example of your lack of judgment. The dogs don't teach themselves to kill. The human being is the ONLY species who preys on its own kind. Leave this poor animal alone and let him return to his family who love him. You don't have to love this animal or this breed but you are suposssed to set the example of giving and protecting and respecting life.

So very sad to hear what is happening to poor, innocent Bruce. He clearly has a family that love him very much and that want and need him home with them. Look how hard his family are fighting to bring him home and how many people agree with them. Show some compassion and release him immediately so that the people who love him can start to make up to him for all the loneliness, fear and suffering he has had to endure since he was taken away. I hope Bruce is returned home to his family soon, where he is loved and where he belongs. Can't imagine what the family are going through but please don't give up the fight to bring him home. I only wish I could help. xx

Discrimination is just plain wrong! You cannot judge a dog (or a person) by its appearance. The problem lies with the irresponsible dog OWNERS, not the dogs. Please let Bruce go home where he is loved and understood. He did no wrong.

Give Bruce back for heaven sake! Each case should be treated individually if there is a case in the first place. Sounds like Bruce did not cause anyone any harm. I almost wish this unfortunate breed did not exist but they do. I had a Pitbull many years ago. Very kind gentle dog, never harmed anyone. He was a good dog. We actually saved him from a stupid owner that was selling Pitbull puppies at a swap meet in Tucson Az. He had the basket of pups out in the sun (105 degrees) with no water. We bought the pup that was nearest death and then turned the kid in after he refused to move the rest of them into the shade or give them water! There's all kinds of animal abuse out there and one kind is to penalize an entire breed and mark them for death because of their irresponsible owners. Give those kind people their dog back. You can tell alot about a pet owner by their animals. If the dog is ok, the owners probably are too! I'm thinking about packing up and moving to Ireland anyway. We're losing our right to God here in the USA.

I have been following this story for a while now. I'm asking you to let Bruce live and go to the shetler in Southern Ireland. He and his family have been through enough. It wasn't his choice to be born part pit bill. He's not harmed anybody. He's a very loved animal that just wants to give love. Is that a reason to be put to death? Again - I'm asking you to end the pain and suffering he and his family are experiencing. Please let him live!

I could understand euthanizing a dog because he has beaten another dog or human being, but just because he is a Pitbull? Where are we? Is this the time of the KKK, when all black people were bad just because of the sking color? Please get real!!! Bruce hasn't hurt anyone. If someone's been hurt, that is Bruce and his family!!! It's not the race who creates the problem, it's the dog owners!!!! Thanks for sending BRUCE back to his family, it's right about time!!!

I've already heard about Bruce and understand that he was in perfect health when he was taken away but this is not the case now, as a result of being mistreated by the authorities?!! I am so fed up with the majority of responsible dog owners being punished because of a small minority and we need to stand together and get Bruce (and pets like him) returned to their owners where they belong.

The dangerous dogs act is barbaric and totally unnecessary! I am an RSPCA volunteer and can honestly say that rescue centres are filled with 'similar' 'pit bull type' cross breeds. At the end of the day ANY dog whether it be as small as a pug or as large as a great dane has the potential to be aggressive - but that doesn't mean that they are. A prime example of the supposed dangerous dog act is cesar milan - his pack consists of over 40 dogs (many of which are bull terriers, alsations, and larger breeds) that were destined to be put to sleep. Yet with a responsible owner these dogs live in harmony with people and other dogs. As not only a RSPCA volunteer but also a dog owner myself I am absolutely appauled at this horrific situation and the state that the poor creature (and its family) are now in. The RSPCA have rights to prosecute neglect and cruelty which is exactly what this case is and I just do not understand how this is allowed to happen. Its tragic as any true dog lover understands and I hope and pray that there is a happy ending. My thoughts are with both the family and Bruce. I struggle to understand how people can be that uncaring and heartless with any living creature whether it be human, canine or any concious living creature. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let Bruce overcome this uneccesary horrendous episode of his life at home with the people he loves and who love him. Its absolutely awful.

We love Ireland and have visited several times, so it distresses us greatly that such a intolerable, inhumane situation can be allowed to continue. A society can be judged by how it treats it's animals. Why on earth would they be doing this. Bruce should be released back to his loving family.

As the saying goes, the only thing wrong with a Pitbull being aggresive is the owner. The owner is the one that makes the dog aggresive.

There is no reason that you continue to keep Bruce locked or have him destroyed...you have discovered after two years of being locked in a kennel that he is not dangerous. Let him go back to having a loving home and family. I have a dog that looks like a wolf...but isn't..NO ONE better try to take him away from me just because of what he looks like! God gave us dominance over animals....but it was to take care of, love, respect...because he loved his animals so much. He thought we were smart enough to figure out what he meant...show that you have some comprehension...let Bruce go home...now!!

This is inhumane treatment of a family member that is innocent of any offense. This is equal to taking away a child from a family without cause. This is causing pain and suffering for this animal and its family. It is cruel! This is not the actions of a civilized society. Let this poor dog return to its family and revisit this unfair law.

I think its very unfair to victimise all pit bulls, they are not all dangerous, any dog will respong to being treated violently but treated and trained correctly then they are no worse then any other breed

It should be against the law to do this to such a beautiful dog! if the SPCA don't do something about this then I'm very ashamed to support them !!! They are a very sensitive breed that needs to be with its family! It is animal cruelty! BAN STUPID PEOPLE NOT DOGS! Have a better law for the human people who offend and Not the animals !!

There is no need to keep this dog away from his family. You are only setting a cruel example of behavior that shows your administration as unjust terrorists in an unstable country. Why would I, as a tourist, want to set foot in Ireland, where laws are unfair to the people they are supposed to protect, including their pets? Shame on you for torturing this family AND their dog. Do the right thing and return him to his owners!

Blame the deed!! and bad owners!! its all about how they are raised!!! this dog was raised well only and was a good boy only to be treated like this? its like imprisoning a child for remembering his manners!! i say bring that boy home to his family:( i dont know what id do if they took my baby from me because that is what he is FAMILY! BSL is an excuse to torture and malign the character of dogs and owners!!! Blame deeds not breeds!!!

I am dumbfounded that this dog has been held in a kennel for so long when he has no history of aggression. I recently retired from managing a small animal veterinary clinic which also had a boarding kennel. Dogs boarded long term like this become very stressed. I know that things happen in the kennel, but if a dog is getting injured and not healing, it shows that the animal is under a great deal of stress. Some dogs would handle this situation better, but it is still inhumane! Please allow this dog to be released to his owners and transported to an area where just being his breed is not a crime. Then get to work on your legislation. Breed specific legislation is a travesty! I have been bit by one dog in my long career as a veterinary professional --- a Labrador! Don't punish the dog for the crimes of the owner! Sincerely, Marcia Evans

this is terrible, these dogs should be allowed to live! its ridiculous to ban a breed of dog that is no more dangerous than any other. pitbulls are no different to any other dog, they only go mad when these disgusting dog fighters get hold of them. any dog would go mad. the law is a joke. this is such a horrible situation, Bruce should be allowed home, where he can live happily with his family! BRING BRUCE HOME!

this family pet should not be treated this way!! any breed of animal is molded by the humans they are raised by. when the animal is raised with love, the animal returns love. please bring bruce and his family together as they should be.

Weill we start having people put down because certain ethnic groups have a higher rate of crime than others? To single out a particular breed and deem it as dangerous is just as ridiculous. When dogs are trained to fight or kill, then this is what happens. Those who are raised with love and kindness respond in kind. What will be next? The most dangerous dog bred in the world is the German Shepherd.....are we going to give it an automatic kill also? All animals will react the way they are raised and trained....the killing instinct is not inborn, it is learned. Bring Bruce back home.....a veterinarian has determined that he is not a threat to any one. Respectfully submitted, Pat Mendiola Covina, CA. USA

And a poem written in honor of Bruce below:

    'BSL MUST END'
    by Maria Daines

I'm reading about Bruce the pit bull mix
Banned from his family because of what he is.
I'm wiping my tears, I'm hurt inside
Thousands of signatures, a petition - no crime.
Dogs like Bruce are pushed out of sight
They are dragged away, they have no rights
They are banished with no bail, they mourn, become frail...
In the darkness of ignorance there are no wagging tails.
These dogs are removed from where they grew up
With teddy bears and play toys and arms that hugged
With people that smiled, with families that loved
There is no forgiveness? When is love not enough?
I'm upset once again and I quietly cry
I've read so many stories of the bully breeds plight
So many are taken by Breed Specific Legislation
An unworkable law for any dog loving nation.
    Discriminating, cruel, hurtful, unfair
An act of horror on paper written by those who don't care
Used by those in high places who think they are clever
Think of the hearts they have broken forever...
BSL is destructive, it will never be humane
It's a horrible trick of name and shame
It's a bad deed unto dog lovers and the dogs that they love
Responsible owners are given the shove
While real villains and abusers who hang around on street corners
Are beating the system 'above' law and order
They continue to fight their dogs and deal drugs
And good people that care are treated like thugs
People who take their dogs to the vets, who microchip, neuter
    Hope for the best...
Good dogs are forgotten when BSL strikes
It cuts rough and deep, regardless of 'bite'
I could call 'you' a pit bull Mr politician
Would you be dragged away? Would you need a petition?
This poem is a way to express my sorrow
As I wipe my tears and worry about tomorrow
BSL is a nightmare, a political farce
It might even be funny if it didn't cost lives
Your neighbour could say your dog is 'a risk'
And then you could find his name on a list
Your beautiful pup, your elderly mix
Where will you stand if he's seized by police?
So speak up LOUD and speak up NOW!
For the rights of families to protect their hounds
Speak up and speak out before it's too late
BSL is a law based purely on hate!
When the knock comes to the door and your dog starts barking
How will you stop this law from working?
What will you say when they muzzle your friend?
When they drag him away and tell you he's banned?
When he's labelled a 'problem' because his face fits a 'look'
And they tell you he is dangerous, when you know he is not.
Who will be there for you if politicians don't care?
When your dog is destroyed just because he is there...
Who will protect the over bred pups
Whose lives are cut short in a game called luck?
Who will you look to when your dog makes the list?
When he's banned and brutalised, no parole, no release
He's your pet; he's your brother, your sister, your friend
She's your family member, the one you defend
Who will you turn to when BSL strikes?
Speak up one and all - because justice is right.
I'm a lawful good citizen; I do good deeds if I can
But BSL stinks and I raise my hand
I will never uphold a law such as this!
It's an almighty mistake and your dog could be next...
    It's inherently cruel, unbearably bad
When the law is an ass good people get mad!
Write letters, get marching, the time surely has come
We must kick the backside of the BSL bum!
They will tell you it's only 'for your protection' - oh yes!
They will spew lies for England, for they do it best!
But this lie isn't working, it won't pass the test
For your Staffies, your Mastiffs, your bully breed friend
You have every chance to bring BSL to an end
Take the bull by the horns and never give in
Say NO to this rubbish, send BSL to the bin!

    Maria Daines 2009
