    First Flight to First Steps

I was a two months away from my 11th birthday, and was a geeky kid, a big Star Trek fan before it was even semi-cool to admit it.

My family was visiting my dad's parents in Michigan City, Indiana.  My grandpa was born in July of 1893, so he was about my age when the Wright Brothers took their first flight - and he remembered it.  Now here he was, 66 years later, witnessing man's first steps on the moon.  On 15" black and white TV set with rabbit ears.  I vividly remember watching both the TV and him, sitting stooped over very close to the TV, watching it just like he used to sit and watch the Cubs' games.  I remember thinking about the significance of him being a witness two of mankind's most significant acheivements in aviation.

Funny thing was that he didn't believe it.  He was one of those that thought that it was all being done in a TV studio.  :-)
