This iReport is part of an assignment:
Surviving a brain tumor |
Miracle Man of Duke
This is Steve Calloway - Miracle Man - and he happens to be my husband. He is wonderful, smart, funny, and kind, and we are so very happy together. He is a father, grandfather, paramedic, educator, an avid gardener, and a craftsman in wood...but most of all...he is an inspiration to all who know him! And, most people are surprised to discover that he had brain surgery in November of 2007 at Duke Hospital followed by radiation and chemo to treat his Stage 4 GBM.
For many, this most aggressive type of tumor is a death sentence, but for Steve, it was a challenge. From the day of diagnosis with its dire prognosis, and prediction that his medical career was over, Steve chose to believe otherwise. From that moment on he told everyone he met, including Duke's top neuro-surgeon (Dr. Allan Friedman), neuro-oncologist (Dr. Jim Vredenburgh) and the Preseton Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center folks that he was healed and that they were each a part of his wellness team.
From the wonderful gang at Duke to our terrific oncology team in MD (Dr. Mark Sobczak and Dr. Joseph Grasso), we have taken a journey of healing. In less than 4 months, Steve is back to work full-time as a paramedic/firefighter. He is still undergoing chemo, but Steve's MRIs and labs show a complete absence of tumor or cancer cells, and the doctors call him a miracle.
We know that Steve's faith in God, his positive outlook, his perpetual smile, the prayers of friends and friendly strangers, and superior medicine have made him well. He never once asked, "Why me?" but rather asked, "How can I use this to help others." And Steve does that every day...after all...he's the Miracle Man and my hero.
