The Shoelace Dependency
If we are always staring at our shoelaces, we'll never see any birds. That's the metaphor here. As a society, we have been led to become fixated on the little things, the superficial things and we're no longer thinking about the bigger (the really big) issues. In fact, the media is largely afraid to consider the bigger issues like what's happening on the dark side of the moon or interstellar cultures or the origins of humanity. Our focus is kept on crisis after crisis, political speech after political speech, one useless event after another.
