Latinos misrepresented: add 'mestizo' to the U.S. census
Latinos are not classified as a racial group in the U.S. census. The explanation is that a Latino person may be of any race. Even the Latin American countries don't have "Latinos/Hispanic" as a racial identifier, instead they have what we have here: black, white, etc. It all make sense because we can all see that David "Big Papi" Ortiz who's black doesn't look like Cameron Diaz who's white, or George Lopez who looks more Native American. However, while these 3 have categories they can check in the U.S. census (black, white, Native American), the majority of Latinos don't. That's because that majority is Mestizo (people of mixed white and Indian blood). I believe we should add that category in the census so that all Latinos can identify themselves correctly. That's the least we could do after denying them recognition (in the census) as a whole group. I discuss the subject in the article below:
