Once You Visit New Bern, NC, You're Bound to Come Back!
New Bern, North Carolina, is a great place to live! Founded 300 years ago, New Bern was North Carolina’s first State Capitol, the Birthplace to Pepsi Cola, home to the State’s first public school and printing press. Abounding in history; arts; outdoor recreation; shopping; and dining opportunities; MSNBC ranked New Bern as a top retirement spot.
A city rich in history, we are preparing to celebrate our 300th anniversary in January 2010. New Bern boasts to over 150 historical landmarks. There are several guided and self-tour options. Take a trolley or horse and carriage ride through the historic downtown district; if you’re into Segways, we have a local Segway tour business; The Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens offers self and guided tours of the landmark of the NC’s First Capitol Building. No matter which option you choose, you’ll learn valuable information about this great city!
Nestled between the Trent and Neuse Rivers, there are plenty of activities to do on the water! Boating, fishing and swimming draw locals and visitors to New Bern. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the nearby Croatan National Forest which is home to our City’s mascot, the Black Bear. The Croatan offers hikers, birdwatchers, hunters, campers, and fisherman a safe haven to relish in the great outdoors.
The local restaurateurs, artisans, and merchants cater to your needs. Take a Stroll down Middle Street and see for yourself! Work up your appetite visiting the many art shops and galleries, antique stores and gift shops. Then stop into one of the many restaurants for a taste of New Bern’s exquisite dining experiences. From fresh seafood; vegetarian wraps; steak dinners; Japanese, Italian, Mongolian BBQ, Chinese, Mexican, and Thai food; to ice cream parlors, you’ll find something to please your taste buds in New Bern! The New Bern Farmers Market is a favorite place for locals to gather. Here, you’ll find unique treasures offered up by local craftsmen, farmers, and artists.
