This iReport is part of an assignment:
Remembering John Hughes |
San Diego to Shermer, IL - Thanks John Hughes
I just turned 40, meaning I was a teenager of the '80's, or more importantly, John Hughes target demo. Growing up in San Diego I fell in love with semi-fictional Shermer, IL, the home of such great films as The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I knew Shermer was a suburb of Chicago, but did it really exist??? All I knew as a teenager was that I wanted to live there, not that San Diego is so bad, but Shermer was green and had snow. Fast forward 25 years...and in eight days, yes, eight days, my wife and I will be closing on our new home in Northbrook, IL (where Shermer, IL was based), just two blocks from the Save Ferris water tower and the Uncle Buck party house. Out of sheer coincidence, or is it, my wife happens to be from Northbrook, she went to Ferris Bueller's high school. I didn't plan it, but crazy as life is, this forgotten teenage dream is actually becoming a reality, how weird is that. John, you made a huge impression on so many, and may be the subconscious reason I'm starting my family in Shermer, IL.
