Meteor Shower to Continue Till Aug 24, Emirates, Dubai
DUBAI — The Perseids meteor shower that began on July 17 will continue until August 24 with falling rocks from the annual passing of a comet lighting up the night sky.
The Dubai Astronomy Group President, Hasan Ahmad Al Hariri, said the spectacle appears to emanate from the constellation in the northern sky called Parshawyyat — Arabic for ‘Bearer of Ghoul’s Head’ — or Perseus named after the Greek hero Perseus.
Several other meteor showers happen during the year but, Al Hariri said, this was one of the best because of the brightness and the frequency of the meteors, with fireballs occur-
ring often. The climax of the event took place early in the morning of August 12 with more than 400 people venturing into the desert to witness the display of fireworks. However, viewing possibilities were limited due to the
dusty weather and bright moon light.
Residents can see shooting stars like a lightning straight line moving in the sky as fast as 11-72 km/second if they head to the beach or the desert, away from the city and pollution.
