This iReport is part of an assignment:
African perspectives on black America |
Identity degradation!
It is not a wonder to me why I am so repulsed against the images of black men with Gold chains and all the flashy diamonds. The media and Europeans or White America at large have come to characterize any black man who engages in this type of public display as a "gangster" a "thug" a "hooligan" "Good for nothing -- Drug dealer"
But something neat happened this past sunday while I was sitting in churhch. It was shortly after "Holy communion" that I turned around to notice the picture of a Pope, the Pope; I am not certain which one, but he certainly was rocking some "bling bling"
Umm, he isn't labelled, its not distasteful because it is "religious" and "holy" right?
What a crock of banana waste?!
Eurocentricism is still alive and well, "black people, wake up" and discover yourselves.
Do not believe the negative images they portray of you.
I am black and Proud, sans Gold chain, Diamonds, 24's , Air Force ones'
And please understand, all of these things are acceptable and cool
But never make the mistake of defining yourself or your accomplishments by these things.
You are your culture, your heritage, your intellect, your values, your ethics, you are an intangible life source that has no beginning or end. You embody power, confidence, and self control.
Live to Inspire!
