    Remembering Ted Kennedy

    More from CathyJ

    Thank you Mr. Kennedy

Last night, I was watching late night television on some silly network....and suddenly..."we interrupt this program"...and there it was.....Ted Kennedy had lost his battle to cancer.  I remember saying to my 34 year old son...."now this makes me sad -- God Bless Him".  Honestly -- it wasn't because I had followed his illustrious career in the Senate.  It wasn't because I was from his home state.  It was because I was suddenly drawn back to JFK's assasination.  I was in the 6th grade when we lost JFK....I cried for days.  The reason I cried?  Not because I was a politically astute 6th grader - but because the year before I had written a letter to him - and OMIGOD -- I got an answer back from the White House - ok so he didn't sign it personally - but I KNEW it was from "him".  Then....just a few months later we lost Bobby... and I can remember thinking how sad for their family.  It wasn't till I was much older that I learned more about the Kennedy saga....so much sadness....but yet so much promise.  As with the rest of the world...I've been aware of the trials and tribulations of this family...what a mixed bag of events -- and "Teddy" seemed to adapt naturally into being the patriarch.  I was particularly touched by two reports that seemed to humanize Ted.... one was about a little girl from the Soviet Union (reported on CNN) -- "the little refusenik" --- it would seem he literally stepped in and saved her life and thus inspired her to become involved with public service.  The second story I watched on t.v. this evening - Teddy made a connection with a young girl from an inner city school -- their connection led to frequent visits by Mr. Kennedy to read with her... teach her... make her want to learn.  She's now a university sophomore.  Your commitment to what is right -- amazing -- and your dedication to "the people" -- forever appreciated.

I'm sad....weeping during some of the CNN broadcasts this evening.  But I pause to think about how this remarkable family took such a hold of the United States.  Our fascination with "Camelot".... how one family could endure so many losses...and have to endure them in such a very public way.  Unbelievable.... and awesome at the same time.

Mr. Kennedy you fought the valiant fight....cancer is a tough adversary.... but through it all... that wonderful grin you had.....that mischievous twinkle in your eye... your dedication to your family --- not just your children - but the children of your fallen brothers --- you were the center of their universe.  You are at last reunited with your brothers... your mother....your father.... and others of your family who have gone on before you.

May God grant you peace.....comfort your family...your friends....and well-- your foes -- as I am sure tonite they are reflecting on their experiences with you and appreciating having the privilege of knowing you.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your amazing family........God Bless Them ALL.....
