Remembering Ted Kennedy |
Kennedy - Three Brothers - End of an Era
The Kennedy's have always held a special place in my heart - I was born in Boston, Mass. I was raised in the turbulent 60's, and the brothers were simply legends then in New England.
Growing up in Boston with a father that was in the Air Force, we even had pictures of the brothers in our living room. When John was assassinated, We watched the funeral on a busted up Sears B & W TV - with the picture turned upside down! I'll never forget the intense feeling of loss during this time, and when Robert and Martin were killed in 1968, we thought the world was coming to an end.
Then, in 1972, we placed our hopes on Ted. But the events at Chapaquidick, along with a poor interview with Roger Mudd on CBS killed the attempt for a run against Jimmy Carter in 1975.
But he came back in the convention in 1980, and he never looked back. He was easily one of the best Senators ever - he championed Civil Rights, he supported Title 9 for woman's sports, and most importantly he was "Bi Partisan".
When the Iraq war broke out, he one of the first to oppose the war - But at the same time, he supported our troops.
In an Interview with the CBS Program "60 Minutes" later on in his life, correspondant Leslie Stahll asked him what he felt his legacy would be. "Making a difference" he said.
With all three brothers having passed away now, "Camelot" has truly came to an end. RIP Ted..
