Awe
Awe is not considered a basic emotion. Awe is considered an 'advanced emotion'. Awe happens when fear and surprize colaborate to suckerpunch our senses. I can think of many things that put me into a state of awe. In a powerfull display such as lightning strikes followed by the accompaning clap of thunder, I can think of few things that are undisputably and consistently a sure fire way to put anyone in a state of awe.
Witnessing a great lightning storm takes me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. A great lightning storm not only brings about those elements of fear and surprize to the observer, but when you find yourself in the middle of a lightning storm, the anticipation, which is considered a basic emotion, also plays a factor. Add to that the rush of joy and excitement after a big strike which is just as stirring. The emotional ride doesn't end there. After the storm subsides, and upon reflection, I doubt I am alone in thinking that lightning in itself shows no fear and with each strike leaves us wondering if it is Mother Nature's way of displaying her anger.
