    The Part-Time Working Dilemma

In this most recent day and age, many are forced to take on two part-time jobs opposed to the standard one in order to make ends meet simply due to the lack of full time employment prospects or offerings. This can make for a required tremendous amount of time management skills in order to juggle this unorthodox type of employment. And it does seem that the days of the cliché eight hour job availabilities continues to decrease with every passing day seemingly forcing many to seek the part time route. Often, many times, a person will most assuredly run into scheduling conflicts or uncontrollable events that will "toss a wrench in the gears." This can make for a stressful environment and many times, the potential in monetary gain will usually be minimal at best. Especially in locations that primarily have employment prospects that surround either the construction or tourism industries and are dependent upon business models that fluctuate throughout the year.

Regardless, this is a direction that many are forced to deal with day in and day out in today´s employment environment. However, not this entire scenario is completely from the con or negative point of view. There are a few positives involved when the pieces seem to fall perfectly into place. For example, maybe the job is simply for extra spending money and is not a requirement for existence. Often the length of the shift will typically be usually around four to five hours and this often is a somewhat welcome relief for most employer management personnel in which labor cost is of concern to them. It can also be a relief for the worker themselves too. One may have a time gap in between jobs that allows the opportunity for a break. Also, two completely different part time jobs will usually be a refreshing change for many.

However, there are many bad aspects associated with this type of scenario too and will generally have the potential to be more devastating in the long run. Most times, it will entirely deal with health issues. At part-time status, one will realize that either health benefits are not offered or that at the part-time level, one would not even is able to afford the benefit plan. This is assuming that one´s employer even offers a health plan.

Another frightening aspect is that there are many baby boomers that are more and more beginning to fall hard into this category. These are folks that at one time was considered to have a very handsome retirement nest egg and have lost a substantial portion of it with the recent stock market decline. This has placed many in the unenviable position of being required to seek employment. And, shockingly, they will realize that the "employment world" has changed considerably.

And yet, another consideration that many will have to make besides all the logistical considerations is the fact that many part-time working folks are part of a larger family that will most likely have small children within the household. If the children are of school age and the parent is able to work during those school hours, this can be a blessing in disguise. But, regardless of the child´s age, there are the special considerations that will pop up from time to time. After all, no one can predict when a child will become ill. Of course, we can however, expect it to happen from time to time. It is an inevitable part of a family´s existence and the best that a parent can hope for is that their employer is understandable to these occasional needs. Along the family lines too is that many lost parenting hours will certainly be sacrificed also.

And, although the recent and somewhat disturbing federal statistics tend to lean toward the economy becoming better, this is a factual scenario that is far becoming a way of life for many that have had their unemployment benefits expire, and thus, have been taken off the unemployed lists. This will have a tendency to decrease the unemployed number rolls and give the impression that the economy is getting better. But, can this be considered to be an indication that the economy is stabilizing and getting better? Is this the direction that the future employment environment is leaning toward? Does this create a positive future growth for many, or simply an existance?

Simply ask a two or more job part-timer. The answer lies with them.
