Stories from Second Life |
40th Anniversary of Beatles Split
Forty years ago, on the 26 September, 1969, Abbey Road, the last album recorded by Beatles was released, and at the same time Beatle John Lennon had secretly decided to quit the legendary band. Fans still flock to Abbey Road in St John’s Wood, City of Westminster, London, to see the famous ‘zebra crossing’ where the Beatles were photographed for the Album cover outside the Abbey Road Studios. That album cover is perhaps the most famous Beatles picture, with thousands of fans having their photos taken at the same spot over the years.
I had heard mention of Beatles tribute bands and clubs since I first started in SL, in fact there was a replica of the Cavern club (where the Beatles were first discovered in real life) a while ago, but I failed to find it yesterday, so I’m not sure if the Liverpool sim still exists or not. However there are many groups listed for the Beatles and they seem as popular as ever in the virtual world.
I went over to one sim called ‘Magical Mystery Field’ which has been built by Marianne Shan and it’s a beautiful garden with Beatles memorabilia everywhere. In fact she plays music from that era there too, so it’s a nice place to visit if you like 60’s/70s music. There is a cartoon of the famous Dr Robert you can hug (Dr Robert was one of the early Beatles songs) and a Magical Mystery tour bus waiting to take you away! She says in her profile ‘I’m Lucy in the Sky’ so it sounds like Marianne is a big fan of the Beatles.
Another sim I visited was called Beatrain at Ooberscom which is owned by Tetsuya Andrew. This has a shop where you can buy guitars and all sorts of instruments and Beatles style suits, as well as a stage area set up for Beatle animations. I played the drums and took Paul MacCartney’s place on the stage, and I could imagine a group of people having lots of fun there.
Well it is forty years since the Beatles decided to split, but it seems like their legend lives on in SL, just like their music will in real life.
