Mary Travers Dies at 72, Leaves Legacy of Melodious Calls to Action
Mary Travers, 72, the iconic blonde singer of the 1960s group “Peter, Paul & Mary (PP&M)” has died of leukemia – and left generations of fans remembering her melodious contributions to causes as fresh then as now.
These photos, shot by me at the Lehigh University Fall Houseparty in 1963, captured them at their peak.
Unlike Joan Baez, whose songs proved too edgy for many of the era, and the Mamas and the Papas, who simply made great harmony, PP&M captured the spirit of the generation focusing on the hypocrisy of segregation and war with “If I Had A Hammer,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “500 Miles” and especially, melodious versions of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In the Wind” and “Times They Are A Changin’.”
