iPhone 3g Announced, Built-in Camera Falls Further Behind

Overall, the keynote announcements at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference this morning were impressive. A global rollout to 70 countries and a maximum worldwide price set at $199 USD are incredible moves towards Jobs goal for iPhone world domination. They definitely addressed two of the main issues people had with the current model by lowering the price and increasing the availability, and I'd expect they will take a huge chunk of the smart phone market share this year. One disappointing note however is the built-in camera. Adding GPS to the iPhone is a nice addition and should definitely lead to a geo-tagging boom, but the camera hardware received no attention. 2 Mega Pixels wasn't an impressive spec for a smartphone camera when the iPhone first debuted last June. With the lack of any upgrade today it's not only behind nearly every other smartphone on the market, but even most current basic and flip phones. And how did they miss adding video recording? Apparently customers must not have complained loud enough to Apple this last year. Did they somehow forget about YouTube, even after requiring them to convert all their videos away from flash so they could be viewed on the iPhone? Video isn't a novelty on the web or one phones anymore, it's commonplace. An especially disappointing oversight for people like me hoping to use the new iPhone as the ultimate mobile news desk! update: 3rd party applications like this one could bring hope for video recording, but of course built-in would have been welcome: http://monsterandfriends.com/iphonevideo
