The G-20 summit |
University of Pittsburgh students attacked on sight: G20 Summit "Riots"
In the late hours of the night, Riot police were assembled to quell what they called "riots" on the campus of The University of Pittsburgh.
Though students did excercise their right to assemble and protest against the G20 Summit, there were no reports of them fighting against police or other patrons of the school.
There are several video doumentations posted publicly on the video site "Youtube.com", depicting the actions of the police and the students involved. Throughout the entirety of the night, police gave the students continual warnings to disperse, and declared their protest as an "Unlawful Assembly", which under the United States Constitution is violating the rights of its people.
Depicted in one particular video document, tear gas cannisters are lobbed at groups of students and faculty on the site, as well as students not at all involved with the protest, such as one particular group having the cannisters thrown up at them upon a patio three stories above the entire riot. And in one other instance, a couple merely standing on the sidewalk, unaware of the police coming towards them, are put to the ground and arrested with no cause. Excessive force was apparent.
One anonymous eyewitness claims that the police allegedly stormed the dorm rooms and told all within them to get out, arresting anyone who did not move at the pace the police ordered. Some were shot at with rubber bullets or less lethal rounds, even when adhering to the orders of the riot police. Many feel that their rights were violated on this day, and in my own opinion, I agree with them.
