June 10, 2008, Franklin, Indiana. The devastation is unimaginable. It brought tears to my eyes to see families moving everything they own out of their homes. There are prayer tents set up in areas and church organizations heading up volunteer labor to help families in need. The city smells of rotten fish, animals, sewage and stagnant water. As I drove past the police station I noticed the cars not washed away by the floods were covered in flowers from the graveyard across the street. Police cars are strewn across the parking lot and onto the baseball field behind the police station. Families are waiting for the county and state to be labeled a disaster area in order to get funding from the government. As town meetings are held the community leaves feeling helpless and with many unanswered questions. The police are working to keep people from taking items from homeowners yards, items thought to be thrown away by the owners but really are set out to dry and preserve. The Red Cross is offering masks, tetanus shots, water, food and clothing and someone to talk to. The community is in need of money, gas cards, water, thick rubber gloves, boots and laborers. The clean-up from the flood will take several months. There are families going broke in such a short amount of time from spending money on food, clothing and the extra gas to haul their salvaged items away. The gas prices are not helping matters much.
