Driving Distracted Cellphones Texting
Here in California there is a law already in place as of July 1st, 2008 against driving while holding a cellphone and talking. If you are over 18, you can use a hands-free cellphone. Also, as of January 1st, 2009, texting is against the law and is an infraction. First time offenders are fined $20.00, second or more offenses are fined $50.00 plus penalties. These laws also apply to out of state drivers even if the state they live in has no law against it. I am all for these laws and fines. My personal story woke me up. I was driving on the freeway when my cell rang, I picked it up, talked to my daughter for geez, I don't even know how long. All the sudden I was at the location I had been driving to. I had no idea how I got there. My focus was not on driving, it was on the conversation I was having. That really woke me up, it's been at least six years since that happened and I have not talked on my cellphone while driving since then. Sometimes new laws are for a very good reason. Drive safe!!
