The U.S. Geological Survey has updated its map of the series of quakes centered near Vanuatu and the Santa Cruz Islands that triggered a tsunami alert in the Pacific. However, tsunami guages only recorded waves between 3cm and 10cm.

According to the USGS, the three largest quakes were initially estimated at magnitude 7.8, 7.7, and 7.3 (and later revised to 7.6, 7.8, and 7.3) with a series of at least 25 aftershocks as large as 6.8 on the Richter scale as of October 8, 2009. The smaller quakes marked in yellow are from last week while the ones marked in red are more recent (within the past hour). One 4.9 quake preceded the major quakes by about 17 hours.
